The Assumption Board of Education met March 11, 2008.  Chairman Bob Schneider called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m.  Members Present:  Brian Giese, Jennifer Grammond, Mary Zosel, Bob Schneider, Chandel Dietz, Suzie Eklund, Mike Mahoney, Fr. Tim

B.        Recommended Action

a.              Motion by Chandel, seconded by Suzie to approve the agenda with the addition of  A. 3. Visitor Comment, motion passed.

b.              Motion by Brian, seconded by Suzie to approve the minutes, motion passed.

c.              Motion by Mike, seconded by Brian to approve the finance reports, motion passed.

C.        Unfinished Business

1.         Kids Against Hunger:  Tom reported those that attended, enjoyed and found beneficial.

2.              LIFE Night Speaker is scheduled for April 9th, all will be invited to attend.

3.              Confirmation Planning meeting was held, Assumption will host Confirmation on May 4th.

4.              Safe Env. Training:  Tom reported completing this training.

D.        New Business

a.           Faith Formation Survey:  Tom and Kim shared results of the survey,

discussion was held.  Copies of the compiled survey results are available at the Parish Office.

E.        Principal

Jennifer reported that on Feb. 10, the 5th and 6th graders had a band concert and they did a beautiful job.  During Catholic Schools Week they had the opportunity to listen to a professional flutist and pianist. 

E.L.C.:  During the week of Jan. 14-18 twelve students and thirteen adults attended Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center located north of Duluth.  A great time was had by all.  Classes we participated in included:  snow shoeing, cross country skiing, birds, energy and CO2, forest ecology, frozen lake study, rock climbing, adventure ropes, etc.

Catholic Schools Week:  although it was a cold week we were able to enjoy all our activities, which included downhill skiing at Andes, sledding, bowling and bingo.

Safe Environment Training:  Monday, Feb. 4 the classrooms watched videos and discussed what to do with strangers, how to listen to their feelings, and about the importance of telling someone.

Stations of the Cross:  we have begun doing Stations of the Cross with the students on Friday mornings during Lent.

On January 9th  we visited the Benson school to have an in-service on SMART boards, which are interactive boards that are used in the classroom instruction.

Spanish Teacher:  will be spending time studying in Peru until August.  She has done a great job at St. MaryÕs and will be returning to teach Spanish for beginning next fall.

We are working on the yearbook,  using a the company Lifetouch.  Families will need to preorder these books and the approximate cost is between $16-$18.

New Chairs:  40 chairs were sold to St. JohnÕs Prep, the correct new chairs have been ordered and should be arriving shortly

 

F.         Home and School Association

Jennifer reported on the success of the Celebration for Education.  Discussion was held, looking at options for next year.

 

G.        Committee Reports

Recruitment and Public Relations:  Kindergarten Round Up was successful with thirteen families attending.

Long Range/Priority: no meeting

Education Fund:  striving to grow the fund, returns were down in Jan. and Feb.

Technology:  continue to have problems, purchased new router

Maintenance:  Brian reported on the emergency lighting issue, seeking advice from the Fire Chief, will continue to research options.  Kieffer Electric will provide a quote once we determine what is needed.

Fundraising:  Marathon, Pizza Hut Night, and a Breakfast left to hold, needing to raise $8325 to meet the fundraising goal.

Benefits:  has not met

Finance:  2008-09 budget is still being worked on, needs fine-tuning.

 

H)        1.         Unfinished Business 

a.              Motion by Chandel, seconded by Mary to approve Safety policy #509 as written, motion passed.  Tabling #507, #508 and #508A until Karen Folkman, school nurse can review and advise.

b.              Elections:  Chandel reported she and Suzie are working with the Parish Council regarding the elections.  Nomination weekend will be April 5th & 6th  and elections will be April 26th & 27th.

 

            2.         New Business

a.              Evaluation of Principal, Board and Staff:  discussion was held, the Board will not evaluate themselves.  Fr. Baltes will evaluate Ms. Grammond with Board input and Ms. Grammond will evaluate the staff.

 

 

 

Teacher Report:  Mrs. Rohloff, grade 6 teacher reported having a good year.  The Science Fair is scheduled for March 27th.  The School Store has replaced the Bake Sales this year and is going very well.  The store is open each Friday morning.
